![]() The Mountain Feist was recognized by the United Kennel Club on February 1, 2015. Today’s Mountain Feist is the result of generations of breeding for performance and is still primarily used to hunt squirrel, although they are also used to hunt raccoon, rabbits and more. Like the Cur breeds, the Feist breeds were developed in the rural South by breeders who needed low-maintenance dogs to hunt small game and to eliminate vermin, Feist were often the result of crosses between hunting hounds and terriers. The word “feist” is an ancient one referring to a small, often noisy dog. Mainly used as a squirrel dog, the Mountain Feist is also good at hunting raccoons and tracking larger game. As a result, most of the Cur breeds are types rather than breeds, i.e. Curs are usually not recognized as show dogs, but developed solely for their hunting ability. Feist are very vocal dogs, communicating with growls, bays and barks.They are very protective around the people they know best. Cur dogs are a group of purebred dogs and their crosses specialized as multipurpose working/hunting dogs from the southern USA. Mountain Feists are curious, intelligent, alert and physically active dogs which are suited for hunting and as companion dogs. The ears are wedge-shaped, and held erect or semi-erect, the eyes are small and dark. The skull is slightly rounded, the face wedge shaped. The coat colors include red and white red, black and tan blue and white red brindle, Trio-Colored and white. They have paws suited for climbing because of their strong hind legs and sharp curved nails. (Treeing Feist) The Mountain Feist has a short, smooth coat. Our dogs are bred to start treeing at an early age and hunt at a high rate of speed with their eyes, ears, and nose. Through our breeding program, we always breed to get better. We have made trips to five different states to get some of the best blood lines out there. We put a lot of hard work, study, and miles into making our blood lines. Feisty and energetic are two of the primary traits that come to mind for those who have experience with Terriers. These little dogs are low maintenance, have a great temperment, aim to please and will give 110% everytime the tailgate drops. Their energy, intelligence, and tenacity make them loyal workers and companions, while their desire to bond with humans makes them great family dogs. We have found that these mountain feist are pound for pound our breed of choice. The black mouth cur, named for their square black muzzle, is a shorthaired ranch dog with a sweet personality. We have owned, hunted, and bred several different breeds of dogs over the years. At the start of the century this dog was exceedingly rare, and yet this decade these dogs are starting to make a comeback due to their popularity as a family pet. We are six friends with the same passion about squirrel dogs.
